Johnny Cupcakes Lecture Series Video

Over the past few years Johnny Cupcakes has been on tour doing an international lecture series. We we're lucky enough to watch him at Syracuse University and then go on a wild rumpus against fakes. Check out the video below that highlights the series.

Words from the man:

To be honest, when I was first asked to lecture- I was kind of nervous. I even brought some extra deodorant with me for extra precaution. When I returned home from my lecture, I was sort of weary about doing another one. Grabbing some Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies out of my freezer, I sat down to check my email. To my surprise-- I found hundreds of e-mails in my inbox, from now inspired, motivated, excited students. After that-- I had a whole new positive outlook on lecturing.. and I don't even need extra deodorant! It makes me feel like I'm doing more than just making t-shirts. Even if my story + words of wisdom only inspires and motivates just one person, I feel I can die a happy guy.

Follow Johnny on twitter and become a fan on facebook.

Johnny Cupcakes vs. A Syracuse Sorority Ripoff

As mentioned in my previous post about the Johnny Cupcakes lecture at Syracuse, there is no space for fakes! Johnny went in for a while in the lecture about being ripped off and the legal battles and ended by bringing up that a certain sorority on our very own campus was guilty of ripping his design off this year. I see this tee shirt around campus all the time and even the font is ripped off to down to a tee.

Johnny assembled an angry mob of fans to march over to the violating sorority house and give en the business.
(Side contest, comment and guess if Meezy is a)singing b)burping c)yelling an ancient battle cry or d) yawning in the picture above. A chance to win exclusive breath enhancing prizes from SwaggerDap is at hand.)

After running over to the house, the girls wouldn't open up to an angry mob for some reason, but they were peeking through the windows to see what was going on.

Finally one of the girls who happened to be wearing the ripoff shirt showed her face, being welcomed to a bunch of "boo's" from the crowd. As you can see, Johnny was quietly making his point too.

The angry mob kinda turned into a laughing mob, but we still made our presence felt.

As a sort of a peace offering one of the girls gave him a shirt.

Everyone wanted him to light it on fire and cause a scene, but when one of your company credos is "Make cupcakes not war" it's probably a better PR move to be the bigger person here. He did make them agree to only wear the shirts as pajamas though so that they are never to be seen in public again. And since he has a whole new fan base in Syracuse now I'm pretty sure he will find out if they do. I know I'll twitpic it to him.

Thanks once again to Johnny Cupcakes for giving us a great and eventful evening at Syracuse. Hope you come back!

Johnny Cupcakes Lecture at Syracuse University

We were lucky enough last night to have John Earle, the man behind Johnny Cupcakes, come to Syracuse University to give us a really great lecture, teach us a bunch about starting a business, his own story, and he even got together a little coalition to stop the ripping off of his products.

The line was out of control, as expected, but little did we know how worth it the next 4 hours would be.

John gave us his full story about how the business came to be and his own entrepreneurial tale, even selling pranks to kids in school to make some side cash. The man has always been a thinker and a hustler.
He also went into copyright infringement and the numerous brands that have ripped his designs off, like Urban Outfitters, Billa Bong, Pastry numerous times, and many more. He also somehow discovered that a certain sorority at our school was using his design on their bid tees. Needless to say he was not too pleased and trust me he made a big deal about it later on by showing up at their house. More on that in the next post though.

One of the many messages that he conveyed.

After he was done, people mobbed him to buy merch, say hi and get autographs.
We were too busy checking out the Saved by the Bell trading cards that were hidden under our seats. Too funny.

And he really would have been there till 3am if that's how long it took for him to sign every single autograph. Dedication.

But there were more important things to attend to for a moment as an angry mob assembled to show some sorority girls that copy and paste aint cool.

Overall the speech was just about doing what you love and making people happy though, really inspiring. He has such a deep appreciation for his fans and is always trying to give them the coolest stuff to keep them excited about the brand. This is why he has turned down so many offers to be carried in shops worldwide and large department stores. Rather than cashing in he cares more about the quality and fine details of the brand in every single aspect no matter how small.

Other things I learned from Johnny Cupcakes:

The Hundreds x Johnny Cupcakes is coming soon
Johnny cupcakes cereal should be coming soon
Johnny Cupcakes x Looney Tunes is coming soon
"I'm not gunna say it" is the new "That's what she said"
Beerpong is a dirty game
The worst ship to get on is a relation-ship

and as he kept saying "I make millions of dollars off of tee shirts wit cupcakes on them ..... c'mon guys you can think of something better than this"

To be continued .....
