Shanghai 5 (Skateboarding Documentary) | Video

Film maker Charles Lanceplaine put together this excellent documentary that explores the slowly uprising skating scene and culture in Shanghai, China. Relatively lengthy but completely worth the watch, especially if you've visited Shanghai (or just China) before. The first half is more documentary geared, while the second half is mostly skating footage throughout the city...

Really well done and great to see the opinions of the locals as well as ex-pat skaters. Skate culture is so ready to blow up in China, and I think they need that rebel culture so bad! Hopefully the government doesn't crack down too hard as it grows and takes over the streets and parks.

Bape Shanghai Opens

The long awaited Bape Shanghai has just opened in Xintiandi, peep the interior...

It's always hard to judge how large a store is from pictures, but this looks like a pretty decent sized Bape store (which are mostly smaller than you'd think), and as always is very well done by Wonderwall. Nigo will be in on the 20th for a signing of the Shanghai opening tees as well as the release of the Shanghai camo items.

Can't wait to check it out.

Bape Shanghai Opening 11/13

In conjunction with IT, Bape will finally be opening their very first China store on November 13th...

Yep, right in the heart of Xintiandi, next to IT, Bape will reside. The opening is the 13th, and Nigo will surely be in Shanghai to sign shirts at the store. I'm really interested to see what kind of reaction and following this will get in mainland.

Store Profile - Fly Streetwear (Shanghai)

When it comes to skateboarding in mainland China, one man is solely responsible for a large part of the movement, that man is Jeff Han. And over 10 years ago, way before skate culture was huge in America, never mind in China, Jeff opened one of China's first and now most famous skate shops, Fly Streetwear...

Fly Streetwear has two locations in Shanghai (and now one in Beijing), and is pretty much the authority on skateboard hardware, apparel, and footwear. To my knowledge they are the only official Nike SB account in mainland China, but they also carry etnies, Diamond, Girl, DGK, Circa, Kiks TYO, and more. And since the skate culture is still slowly growing there, you can find some serious heat for really low prices there (unless you wear size 11US and above, that is trickier to find in Asia).

Fun facts:
1. Remember the "fly milk Blazers" that came out a few years ago? Yeah those were done for Fly's founder who used to work at a milk factory before opening up the shop.

2. The original Fly as a set of orange Nike SB stadium seats outside (pic above) that have been there forever and stick out like a sore thumb on the streets of China. Trust me you won't miss them while walking by.

3. Vans is currently making a huge push in China, having opened several stores in Shanghai recently. So when you notice that Fly doesn't carry the Vans you want, just head next door where there is a new Vans shop.

Fly Streetwear's 2 locations:

702-704 Changle Lu (near Fumin Lu)
Jing An District

and

278 Changle Lu
Jing An District
Shanghai, China

Bape Shanghai Opening Items & Camo

A lot of people were anticipating the possibility of a red and yellow colorway for Bape's Shanghai location, but Nigo went with a more subtle blue and yellow camo to represent their 1st store in mainland China...

and as you can see by the empty talk bubble, it looks like Nigo will be there for a signing of the opening tees.

Bape Store Shanghai (Location Update)

Not breaking news or anything, but on a little stroll through Shanghai's Xintiandi district I noticed an obnoxiously loud store front shrouded in Bape camo...

Xintiandi is a small walking district of Shanghai that has kept the small walking streets and passages exactly as they were back in the day. At the very end of Xintiandi is the Xintiandi mall, where Hong Kong fashion conglomerate IT recently opened one of their amazing high end IT department stores, an http://izzue.com, and now soon to be a Bape store (which is connected to the ground floor of IT on the outside of the mall).

STILL not date on the opening.
