Stussy's J Dilla Documentary Pt. 1

With the J Dilla tribute tee dropping this weekend, Stussy has also produced a J Dilla documentary to coincide with "Dilla Day" on the 13th. Part one of the 3 part documentary has just released today, which shows how people such as Houseshoes, Peanutbutter Wolf, The Beat Junkies, and Stones Throw 1st heard Dilla, and also touches on the creation of Jaylib and how that relationship came about...

The Stussy x Stones Throw Dilla tribute tee will be releasing on Saturday the 13th at Stussy chapter stores, in both white and black. If you're planning on getting yours in NY, hopefully I'll see ya there (even though they seemingly aren't having an event for some reason). As for the rest of the documentary, they’re releasing part 2 (”Detroit to Los Angeles”) on next Wednesday and then part 3 (”Donuts”) on the Wednesday after that. Can't wait.

J Dilla Tee by Stussy x Stones Throw

To celebrate the legacy of one of the most beloved producers of all time, Stussy and Stones Throw Records are coming together to release a new J Dilla tribute tee. Seems like over the past few years February has become J Dilla month (as he was born, passed away, and also released his most acclaimed Donuts album all in February) so there is no better time for a tribute tee like this...

Stussy and Stones Throw Records have partnered for Raph Rashid's classic pic of J Dilla on a limited-edition Stussy Tee. This will be released Feb. 13, 2010 in White and Black, available at stonesthrow.com and Stussy locations. The photo was taken by Raph Rashid in Dilla's L.A. dining room-turned-studio, summer 2005, for his book Behind The Beat: Hip-Hop Home Studios. This tee is officially licensed with J Dilla's heirs, who have recently announced a reorganization of the J Dilla Estate (read here).
Stones Throw will also be announcing a multi-city in-store release parties for this shirts. Stay tuned for details.

If you aren't familiar with Dilla, PLEASE do yourself a favor and invest in some of his work. Donuts, Ruff Draft, and Jay Love Japan are his most notable solo works but he also have libraries or work with the likes of Slum Village, Busta, Madlib, Common, and plenty more. Oddly enough I was listening to Dilla's Donuts on the train as I got this email about the tee, very eerie.

J Dilla Print by Obey

J Dilla aka Jay Dee aka "your favorite producer's favorite producer" has had such an amazing impact on the music industry since his death 3 years ago, as people continue to support his legacy. Here Obey takes effect to a classic Dilla photograph (just like the Obama Change print) in honor and support of the late J Dilla.



"Shepard Fairey alongside Brian Cross (B+) has also joined the cause with a special print of J. Dilla based on a 2003 photograph. In a run of 400, the prints will release on February 20th at a retail price of $55 USD (18 in x 24 in)."
